How to choose your wedding menu

MC_WEDDING_BOX

If you love good food, it’s very easy to go around in circles over the wedding menu.

What would granny think of an informal buffet? Or does dad’s fish intake stray only as far as a fish supper? Before you go any further, understand one thing: Every item you choose will have as may arguments for as against, trust us.

So where to start? We’d recommend getting a little selfish. This is your day, and it should be about you. What do you like to eat? – list your favourite things. Are there foods with particular significance to you both? We caterered a lovely wedding in Arran, a place that was very special to the couple. We sourced their favourite Arran food products for the menu – their favourite smoked salmon, replicated a mini canapé pie like something they’d ate the first time they can their on holiday and pudding? We asked their favourite Arran artisan bakery to make some special versions of the Little Rhubarb cakes they had on each and every holiday visit.

Location can also be a major influence on your menu. If you are booking a venue for an indoors wedding, it will most probably have all the kitchen equipment to produce a restaurant style menu. In a marquee? Your menu may be decided upon by the proximity of the kitchen in the adjoining venue, or most likely will require your caterer to set up a catering tent if you still wish to have fine dining meal. This of course is entirely possible (we can do it with our eyes closed) but it will present an extra cost and you need to factor that into your budget (estimate somewhere between £1-2K depending on the menu and the number of guests)

Fancy something a little less formal? A wedding buffet can take a little pressure off the 3 dish decision of a traditional menu and can give fussy guests some additional options. Do get that “buffet” image out of your mind, we’re not on sausage rolls and vol-au-vaunts here – think hearty beef stews, hot parma ham wrapped salmon, and a good mixture of accompaniments – jersey royals, creamy mash or cous cous if you prefer. A good hot buffet needs serving staff, which saves your guests from feeling too “DIY”. If less formal also means more different, barbecues are a big tend for 2014. This pinterest feed will help you think more style, less ketchup.

Lastly remember seasonally. It’s in our genes to match produce to your wedding season, but remember that also needs to stretch into the food style. Your guests may lap up a salad starter in May but would probably welcome something a little more gutsy for a winter wedding.

If you need some inspiration, check out our wedding menus. If you have specific ideas for your menu, give us a call and we can pin down the finer details and help you get that perfect dream wedding meal.
